The BCHN Back-to-School Health Checklist: Why Immunizations matter?

Why Immunizations Matter?

Every August, National Immunization Awareness Month arrives at the perfect time. Right as families are gearing up for a new school year. Between shopping for supplies, picking out first-day outfits, and mapping out morning routines, it’s easy for one crucial item to slip through the cracks: making sure your child’s immunizations are up to date. This month is the reminder every parent needs to pause, check the records, and give their child the strongest possible start to the school year.

Why Immunizations Matter for Back-to-School

Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to protect children, and the classrooms, buses, and playgrounds they share with others. When kids head back to school, they’re walking into close quarters with dozens (sometimes hundreds) of other students. Immunizations help prevent the spread of serious, and often highly contagious, illnesses like measles, whooping cough, and chickenpox.

But protection doesn’t stop with your own child. Immunizations also safeguard classmates who are too young to be vaccinated, those who are immunocompromised, and family members at home who may be more vulnerable to illness. In other words, keeping your child’s shots current is a gift to the entire school community.

Back-to-School Immunization Checklist for Parents

As you work through your back-to-school to-do list, add these immunization steps to the top:

  1. Pull up your child’s vaccine records. Check with your pediatrician’s office or your state’s immunization registry if you’re missing paperwork.
  2. Compare records to your school’s requirements. Every state and school district has its own required vaccine schedule. Requirements can also vary by grade level.
  3. Schedule a well-child visit. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up on any missed vaccines and get a general health check before the school year starts.
  4. Ask about combination vaccines. Many vaccines can be combined into fewer shots, making visits quicker and easier for kids.
  5. Don’t forget flu season. Flu shots are recommended annually starting at 6 months old, and getting one before school starts helps build immunity ahead of peak season.
  6. Keep a copy of updated records. Store both a digital and physical copy. You’ll likely need them for school, sports, and camp forms throughout the year.

Trusted Resources for Parents

Navigating immunization schedules and requirements doesn’t have to be overwhelming. These resources can help:

  • CDC Immunization Schedules (cdc.gov/vaccines) — Official, age-by-age vaccine schedules and back-to-school guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Vaccines.gov — A tool to help you find vaccine locations near you, including pharmacies and clinics.
  • Your state’s Immunization Information System (IIS) — Most states maintain a registry where you can request your child’s official vaccination record.
  • Your child’s school or district website — Check for specific vaccine requirements and deadlines for enrollment.
  • Your pediatrician or family doctor — Always the best resource for personalized guidance based on your child’s health history.
  • Community health centers — Many offer free or low-cost immunizations, especially helpful for families without insurance.

A Small Step with a Big Impact

Checking immunization records might not feel as exciting as picking out a new backpack, but it’s one of the most important steps in getting your child ready for the school year. It protects your child, their classmates, and the broader community. All while giving you one less thing to worry about once the first bell rings.

This National Immunization Awareness Month, take a few minutes to review your child’s records, schedule that appointment if needed, and start the school year with confidence. A healthy start is the best start.
